I was deeply moved when I came across this passage, as it served as a gentle reminder of a profound truth: we are already complete and whole just as we are.

We do not need to seek or add anything new to ourselves; we simply need to lose the heavy burdens that keep us from connecting to that peaceful state within. Whenever you feel down, overwhelmed, or lost, pause and remind yourself to let go: moment by moment, breath by breath.

Here is the story. Someone once asked the Buddha, “What have you gained through your spiritual practice?”

The Buddha calmly answered, “I have gained nothing at all.”

Confused, the inquirer asked, “Then why do you still practice?”

The Buddha smiled gently, “Even though I haven’t gained anything, I can tell you what I have lost:

  • I have lost anger, the flame that burns the soul.

  • I have lost pessimism, the dark cloud that once blinded my eyes.

  • I have lost worry, the thorns that tangled around my heart.

  • I have lost discouragement, the heavy stone pressing on my chest.

  • I have lost anxiety and nervousness, the fear that always followed me like a shadow.

  • I have lost selfishness, the wall that separated me from everyone else.

  • I have lost the three poisons of greed, anger, and ignorance, the chains that keep life repeating in circles.

  • I have lost the ignorance of ordinary people, the illusion of mistaking dreams for reality.

  • I have lost narrow-mindedness, the window that could only see myself.

  • And I have lost the fear of aging, illness, and death, the terror that keeps people awake at night.”

This conversation reveals the true heart of awakening: true wisdom is not about acquiring something new, but about dropping the unnecessary weights of life.
